Virtual Game of S.K.A.T.E. with Chris “Cookie” Colbourn

Welcome to a virtual game of S.K.A.T.E. with Chill ambassador and Element pro team rider, Chris “Cookie” Colbourn! If you’re not familiar, S.K.A.T.E. is the skateboarding version of the timeless basketball game, H.O.R.S.E. It’s essentially an elimination challenge where one participant selects and lands a trick that the other participants are then required to match. If you don’t land it, you get a letter, and if you spell S.K.A.T.E., you’re out.

For an example of how the pros do it, check out Cookie vs. Paul Rodriguez at the Berrics below:

VIRTUAL S.K.A.T.E. ORGANIZATION AND RULES

While it’s essentially the same, the rules and organization of virtual S.K.A.T.E. is inevitably a bit different. Check out our rules and watch the into video below:

  • Anyone can participate! You can challenge a friend or yourself.

  • Remember to stay safe, follow social distancing guidelines, and wear protective equipment (helmets and pads). Safety is #1!

  • Each day (Monday-Friday) we’ll post a video of 1 trick to our Facebook and Instagram stories, and right here. Tricks will be posted at 10:00 am Eastern time (or local time on the local Chill pages).

  • You have until the next trick is posted to practice the trick, land it, and post a video to your own IG and/or FB story. When you post the trick, make sure to share it with us or tag us in it so we can congratulate you!

  • Monday-Thursday you’ll have 24 hours to land the trick. On Fridays you’ll have the whole weekend to land the trick, but it will be a little harder.

  • If you don’t land the trick in time, you get a letter. It’s up to you to keep track of your letters, and we encourage you to add the letters you have to your videos when you post them.

  • If you’re on your last letter (you already have S.K.A.T.) and you don’t land the trick, you automatically get a rebuttal. That means that you can either take another 24 hours to keep working on the same trick OR you can skip it and move onto the next trick. If you succeed on the rebuttal, you don’t get the last letter and you’re still in the game.

  • If you spell S.K.A.T.E., you’re out (but you can definitely keep playing of course).

  • Don’t forget to have fun!

S.K.A.T.E. TRICKS AND TIPS

Keep up to date, and come back to reference all the tricks right here. If you’re not sure what a trick is, or how to do it, we’ll also be posting links to instructional trick-tips videos alongside each S.K.A.T.E. trick of the day.

TRICK #14 – FRIDAY 5/15 – SWITCH HARDFLIP

This is the final trick of the virtual game of S.K.A.T.E. and it’s a hard one (pun intended)! We’d like to thank everyone who has played along, pushed themselves, sent in videos, and hopefully learned a new trick or two. You all rock, and we hope you had as much fun as we did!

For some tips on the Switch Hardflip, check out the videos for Trick #13 (Hardflip), and check out the video on Normal/Fakie/Switch/Nollie in Trick #6.

Since it is Friday, remember that you have all weekend to work on this one and send in your video.

TRICK #13 – THURSDAY 5/14 – HARDFLIP

TRICK #12 – WEDNESDAY, 5/13 – VARIAL HEELFLIP

TRICK #11 – TUESDAY, 5/12 – HEELFLIP

TRICK #10 – MONDAY, 5/11 – NOLLIE

For additional information on what a nollie actually is, check out the video on normal vs. fakie vs. switch vs. nollie in the section below for trick #6.

TRICK #9 – FRIDAY, 5/8 – NO COMPLY FINGER FLIP

This one is a continuation of the No Comply (Trick #8) from yesterday, and although it’s a bit harder, you have all weekend to work on it. Friday to Monday = 3 whole days.

Trick Tips:
Our advice on this one is to practice your no comply, and then watch the video of Cookie closely to learn his technique for the finger flip. Note that he starts out just like a regular no comply, but instead of letting the board bounce off his leg/knee, he levels it out and starts the flip with his hand. Also note that he doesn’t grab the board at all, he slaps/bats the inside edge of it with his front hand.

TRICK #8 – THURSDAY, 5/7 – NO COMPLY

TRICK #7 – WEDNESDAY, 5/6 – FRONTSIDE SHOVE IT

TRICK #6 – TUESDAY, 5/5 – FRONTSIDE HALFCAB (AKA FAKIE FRONTSIDE 180)

The different stances can be confusing. Here’s a little help identifying the differences.

TRICK #5 – MONDAY, 5/4 – FRONTSIDE 180

TRICK #4 – FRIDAY, 5/1 – KICKFLIP

This one is a little bit harder than the previous tricks, but you have all weekend to work on it. Friday to Monday = 3 whole days. Give yourself a big pat on the back when you land it!

TRICK #3 – THURSDAY, 4/30 – POP SHOVE IT (BACKSIDE)

This trick doesn’t have to have a lot of “pop” for S.K.A.T.E. The board just has to spin 180°.

TRICK #2 – WEDNESDAY, 4/29 – MANUAL (FOR AT LEAST 2 SECONDS)

For additional balance training, check out our how to build a balance board video on Instagram and Facebook.

TRICK #1 – TUESDAY, 4/28 – OLLIE
